Hard to hear
I took Elsie back to St Louis last week and wanted to share the update. We first went to the Moog Center to see her pediatric audiologist. They put her in the sound booth every time we go. This was the first time they did "aided testing". So she had her hearing aids on and they were looking to see how well she is hearing with the aids. They played the sounds through the speakers and this was the hard part for me. I am still struggling processing it all. She did pretty well on the left side, for the right ear, I had to plug my ears it was so loud. And she only responded to one tone on the right. This was with the most powerful hearing aid you can put on a child. It confirms that she needs an implant but it still hard to realize that even with the aid, she cannot hear out of that right ear. Also, she was not hearing as well with the left ear as we would like. They want it to be at a 30-40 range and she was testing in the 60-70 range. Not good enough to understand speech and language. They want to test her two more times before this is confirmed and if so, we would be considering her left ear for an implant as well.
The next day we went to the pediatric ENT who is considered a leading pediatric surgeon and has done many of the implants on the kiddos at Moog. He gave us a lot of information on the process. Then he looked in her ears and saw fluid in both ears. He has to do sedated MRI/CT scans but cannot so those with fluid in her ears. So we will go back in a month. If she still has the fluid, he will put tubes in her ears. If the fluid has cleared (yes, please!) he will do the scans. After the scans, he will submit everything to insurance and then we can schedule the surgery.
I talked to the audiologist about the fluid and she agreed that it could have caused the digression we saw in the sound booth. That made us feel better and we are hoping to see better results next time we are there.
We continue to be thankful for our team of doctors and therapists, as well as our family and friends. Your encouragement and support push us closer to the Lord and His strength which is more than enough.
